Abortion protesters take RICO to high court Justices to decide whether law should apply to demonstrations

WASHINGTON--The sometimes aggressive tactics of anti-abortionprotesters, including those who blockade clinic doors or smashmedical equipment, will be the backdrop for a review by the U.S.Supreme Court of how a federal racketeering law can be used againstdemonstrators.

The case the court accepted Monday could affect the number andsize of protests of all sorts, not just at clinics.

Justices will clarify how authorities may prosecute civildisobedience with the federal Racketeer Influenced CorruptOrganizations Act, an anti-racketeering law. They will considerappeals from Chicago anti-abortion leader Joseph Scheidler, OperationRescue and others who were ordered to pay …
