Burke vows to pass retail 'living wage' ordinance

Two years after a divided City Council opened the city's doors toWal-Mart, a powerful alderman vowed Monday to make Chicago the firstbig city in the nation to establish a wage and benefit standard forretailing giants.

Three different versions of the so-called "Big Box" ordinance arenow pending before the Finance Committee, and Chairman Edward M.Burke (14th) is promising to "meld" them together into a version thatcan pass legal and political muster.

"We're not gonna let this languish," Burke said after chairinganother hearing on the subject that featured impassioned pleas fromorganized labor and dire warnings from a leading business group.
